How to Bulk Edit SKUs in Shopify Across All Products and Variants | AssetScope

Shopify does not have a bulk SKU editor. To change a SKU in Shopify, you navigate to a product, select a variant, edit the SKU field, and save. For a catalogue with 300 products and multiple variants each, that’s easily 1,000+ individual edits. A task that should take minutes takes days.

Why Shopify Has No Built-In Bulk SKU Editor

Shopify’s bulk edit tool covers fields like title, price, and tags, but does not expose SKU or barcode fields for bulk editing. This is a known gap that Shopify has not addressed natively. The official workaround is to export your products as a CSV, edit the SKU column in a spreadsheet, and re-import.

The CSV method works in theory. In practice, Shopify’s product CSV format is complex, import errors are common, and any mistake during re-import can corrupt product data. For SKU reformatting at scale — adding a prefix, finding and replacing patterns — the CSV approach is also extremely tedious.

Common SKU Editing Tasks and How to Do Them in Bulk

Adding a prefix to all SKUs: A common need when migrating from one warehouse system to another, or standardising inherited catalogue data. For example, converting SHIRT-001 to WH-SHIRT-001 across every variant.

Find-and-replace in SKUs: Useful for correcting a systematic naming error — e.g. replacing -BLK- with -BLACK- across the whole catalogue.

Adding a suffix: Appending a season code or warehouse identifier to all SKUs.

Clearing SKU fields: When migrating to a new SKU scheme and wanting to start from scratch.

AssetScope’s Bulk SKU Editor supports all of these operations across your entire catalogue, including duplicate detection before you save.

Duplicate SKU Detection: Why It Matters

Shopify technically allows duplicate SKUs — two variants with the same SKU code. Most inventory management systems, 3PLs, and ERP integrations do not. Duplicate SKUs cause silent inventory sync failures, mispicks, and order fulfilment errors.

Before performing any bulk SKU operation, it’s worth running a duplicate check across your catalogue. AssetScope flags duplicates before you apply changes, so you can resolve conflicts first.

After a bulk edit, it runs the check again to ensure your operation hasn’t accidentally created new duplicates.

Bulk Editing Barcodes in Shopify

The same limitation applies to barcodes. Shopify’s native tools offer no bulk barcode editor. If you’re assigning EAN-13 or UPC barcodes to a new product range, or correcting a systematic formatting error across existing barcodes, you’ll need a third-party tool.

AssetScope handles SKUs and barcodes together in the same editor, so you can update both fields in a single operation per product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shopify’s native admin has no bulk SKU editor. Options: CSV export/import (slow and error-prone) or AssetScope’s Bulk SKU Editor which lets you add prefixes, find-and-replace, and clean up SKUs across all variants in one operation.

Not natively. Shopify does not flag duplicate SKUs. AssetScope’s SKU Editor shows duplicate SKUs across your entire catalogue so you can resolve conflicts before they cause fulfilment issues.

Not natively. Shopify's built-in bulk edit tool does not include SKU or barcode fields. You can use the CSV export/import method, which works but is slow and error-prone. A dedicated tool like AssetScope's Bulk SKU Editor lets you bulk edit SKUs and barcodes directly inside Shopify admin without any CSV.

Shopify allows duplicate SKUs at the platform level but most integrations (inventory management, ERP, 3PL) will break silently when they encounter them. It is strongly recommended to maintain unique SKUs across your entire catalogue.

Using AssetScope's Bulk SKU Editor, you can select all products (or a filtered subset), choose the 'Add prefix' operation, type your prefix, preview the result, and apply. The operation runs across all variants of all selected products simultaneously.

Duplicate SKUs often come alongside duplicate titles, handles, and barcodes — especially after CSV imports or platform migrations. Fixing SKUs in isolation leaves the other duplicates in place.
