Shopify auto-generates handles and never cleans them up

When you rename a product in Shopify, the original handle stays. When Shopify detects a duplicate title, it appends -2, -3, or -copy-1. Over time your store fills up with URLs like /products/awesome-blue-t-shirt-final-v2-copy-1. There’s no bulk handle editor in Shopify, no duplicate detector, and fixing them one by one means managing 301 redirects you also have to set up manually.

Three steps from install to first fix.

Scan all handles

Hit Scan and AssetScope fetches every product’s current handle. Messy handles — those with -2, -copy, or long numeric suffixes — are automatically flagged for your attention.

Auto-clean or edit manually

Click “Auto-clean all” to generate clean, slugified handles from every product title at once. Or type a custom handle for any individual product — live duplicate checking prevents conflicts.

Apply in one batch

Review your changes in the preview table, then hit Apply. AssetScope updates every handle in sequence. Shopify automatically creates 301 redirects from the old handles.

Exactly what you’ll see inside the app.

Every change is previewed before it’s applied — select your products, configure your rule, and review the outcome before a single product is touched.

Everything in the tool.

Messy handle detection

Instantly surfaces handles that look auto-generated — those ending in -2, -copy, or containing long numeric suffixes that Shopify appended to avoid duplicates.

Auto-suggest from title

One click generates a clean, slugified handle from the current product title for every flagged product — no manual typing, no guesswork.

Duplicate detection

Before saving, AssetScope checks every new handle against your full catalogue and flags any collision — so you never accidentally break a product URL.

Inline editing

Every handle is editable directly in the table. Type a custom slug, see it validated instantly, then apply all changes in a single batch operation.

301 redirects automatic

Shopify creates a 301 redirect automatically every time AssetScope updates a handle via the API. Your old URLs keep working — no broken links, no lost SEO.

Filter flagged handles

View your entire catalogue or focus only on the flagged handles that need attention. Clean up a subset today and come back for the rest without losing your place.

Common questions about the url handle editor.

Will changing handles break my existing URLs?
Shopify automatically creates 301 redirects when you change a product handle, so any existing links or bookmarks will continue to work. Search engines follow 301s, so your SEO equity transfers to the new URL.
Can I revert a handle change?
Yes — once a 301 redirect is in place, you can go to Shopify Admin → Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects and delete the redirect, or simply change the handle back using AssetScope.
What makes a handle “messy”?
AssetScope flags handles that end in -2, -3 or higher, contain the word -copy-, or have more than 6 hyphen-separated segments. These are the patterns Shopify generates when it can’t use your preferred handle due to a collision.
Does AssetScope update the 301 redirect automatically?
Shopify creates the 301 redirect automatically when AssetScope updates the handle via the Admin API — you don’t need to do anything extra.
Can I set any handle I want?
Handles must be lowercase, contain only letters, numbers, and hyphens, and be unique within your store. AssetScope validates your input in real time and warns you before applying any duplicate or invalid handle.
