The Problem

Shopify locks collection type at creation. Changing your mind costs you.

No native way to convert collection type

Once you create a Shopify collection as manual or smart, you cannot change its type. There is no “convert” button in the admin. The official Shopify workaround is to create a new collection, manually add all your products (or re-enter your rules), then delete the old one — and hope you remember every detail.

Deleting the original breaks every link to it

If your manual collection is at /collections/summer-sale and you delete it to recreate it as smart, that URL is gone. Any external links — Google search results, email campaigns, social posts, bookmarks — now hit a 404. Recovering the SEO equity alone can take months.

Re-entering rules or re-adding products is slow and error-prone

Smart collection rules aren’t exportable. If you’re converting a smart collection to manual you have to page through all its products and re-add them one by one to the new collection. For a 200-product smart collection, that’s a full afternoon of clicking.

Common questions about converting Shopify collection types.

Can I convert a Shopify manual collection to a smart collection?

Not via the Shopify admin — collection type is set at creation and cannot be changed natively. AssetScope’s Collection Converter handles it by creating a new smart collection, transferring the title, description, and image, then deleting the original manual collection and restoring its handle to the new one. The process is fully automated and the collection URL stays identical.

Will the collection URL change when I convert it?

No. AssetScope restores the original handle on the new collection after deleting the old one. Your collection will continue to live at the same /collections/[handle] URL as before. No redirects are needed, and no external links break.

What happens to the products in my manual collection when I convert it to smart?

The manual collection’s products are not automatically inherited by a smart collection — a smart collection’s membership is determined by its rules. When you convert manual to smart, you define the rules in AssetScope’s rule editor. Any product matching those rules will automatically appear in the new smart collection. The original collection is only deleted after the new one is successfully created.

What happens to the rules in a smart collection when I convert it to manual?

AssetScope fetches all products currently in the smart collection and adds them all to the new manual collection before deleting the original. For a large smart collection, this may take a few minutes. The resulting manual collection contains exactly the same product set the smart collection had at the moment of conversion.

Is it safe to convert a collection that’s actively used in my theme?

Yes. The conversion preserves the collection handle and title. Any theme sections, automated collection pages, or navigation links that reference the collection by handle or title will continue to work after conversion. The underlying collection ID does change (since a new collection is created) — if any theme code hardcodes a collection’s GID, review those references after converting.

Does this require a specific Shopify plan?

No. AssetScope uses Shopify’s standard Admin GraphQL API for all collection operations, which is available on all plans including Basic. There are no plan restrictions on the Collection Converter feature. The app is $1.99/month on any Shopify plan.
