How to Add Multiple Products to a Shopify Collection at Once | AssetScope

Shopify manual collections are powerful — but populating them is painful. Adding 50 products to a collection means 50 individual search-and-add operations in the Shopify admin. There is no way to select multiple products and add them all at once. It is one of the most frequently requested features on the Shopify community forum, and it is still missing.

How Manual Collections Work in Shopify

Shopify offers two types of collections: automated (products are added based on rules like tag, vendor, or price) and manual (products are added one by one by the merchant).

Manual collections are essential for curated sets — gift guides, editorial selections, campaign pages, homepage featured products. Because they’re curated, automated rules can’t replace them.

The problem is the editorial overhead. Building a 100-product gift guide in Shopify means 100 individual ‘Add product’ operations in the collection editor. At 30 seconds each, that’s 50 minutes of clicking for a task that should take two.

How to Bulk Add Products to a Shopify Collection

The native Shopify admin has no bulk collection assignment tool. The workaround options are:

CSV import: Shopify’s product CSV doesn’t directly map products to manual collections. You’d need to use the Collections CSV, which is less well documented and not supported by all Shopify plans.

Shopify API: Requires developer access and writing code to call the collectionAddProducts mutation. Not accessible to most merchants.

A dedicated app: AssetScope’s Bulk Collection Manager lets you pick a collection, search and filter your product catalogue, select the products you want to add or remove, and apply — all in one screen.

Bulk Remove Products From a Collection

The same problem applies in reverse. Clearing down a seasonal collection after a campaign means removing each product individually. For a 200-product sale collection after your peak trading period, that’s hours of work.

AssetScope handles both directions — bulk add and bulk remove — with the same interface. You can also use it to audit which products are in a collection, or to move products from one collection to another by removing from the source and adding to the destination in two operations.

Using Tags vs Collections for Organisation

A common question is whether to use tags or manual collections for product organisation. Tags are more flexible — a product can have many tags, and collections can be built on tag rules. Manual collections are better for precise curation where the order matters or where the rule-based approach can’t capture the intent.

For most stores, the answer is both: automated collections driven by tags handle the bulk of organisation, while a small number of manually curated collections handle homepage features, gift guides, and editorial campaigns. Having a fast bulk tool for both makes maintaining both practical.

Use AssetScope’s Bulk Collection Manager: select the target collection, filter your catalogue, select products, and click Apply. No CSV needed.

Shopify’s manual collection editor is designed for individual product management. There is no native multi-select or bulk add functionality.

For rule-based collections, automated collections are fastest. For manually curated collections, AssetScope’s Bulk Collection Manager handles bulk assignment in under a minute.

No. Shopify's admin requires products to be added to manual collections one at a time. There is no built-in way to select multiple products and add them all to a collection simultaneously. AssetScope's Bulk Collection Manager provides this functionality.

With AssetScope you can add selected products to one collection per operation, but you can run the operation multiple times in quick succession — select the same products, choose a different target collection, and apply again. Each operation typically completes in under a minute.

AssetScope processes collection assignments via Shopify's GraphQL API, which supports batch operations. There is no hard limit imposed by AssetScope beyond Shopify's own collection size limits (Shopify allows up to 5,000 products per collection on most plans).
